James Woods es hijo del oficial del ejército Gail Peyton Woods, fallecido en 1960, y de la profesora Martha Woods. Tiene un hermano menor llamado Michael, nacido en 1957.
A causa de la profesión de su padre, James residió en diferentes localidades estadounidenses durante su niñez y adolescencia. Tras terminar el instituto estudió Ciencias Políticas en la M.I.T., en Massachussetts. A finales de los años 60 comenzó a actuar en representaciones teatrales, debutando en Broadway en el comienzo de la siguiente década. Posteriormente hizo sus primeras apariciones televisivas, en series como “Kojak” o “Las calles de San Francisco”, y cinematográficas, debutando en la película de Elia Kazan “Los Visitantes” (1972).
A partir de ahí fue haciéndose un sitio en el mundillo, destacando sobre todo como secundario.
Ha obtenido dos nominaciones al Oscar:
- En 1986 por
Salvador (Oliver Stone). Pero la estatuilla finalmente iría a para a manos de Paul Newman por El color del dinero.
- En 1996 por
Fantasmas del pasado (Rob Reiner). Ese año el Oscar fue para Cuba Gooding Jr por Jerry Maguire.
